Upload speed is the number teachers forget
Internet plans advertise download speed. Teaching depends on upload, because you are the one sending video and a shared screen for the whole lesson.
The FCC's consumer broadband guide lists 5 to 25 Mbps of download for a student and 6 Mbps for HD video teleconferencing. In March 2024 the FCC also raised its fixed broadband benchmark to 100 Mbps down and 20 Mbps up. The same report found that fixed service at that level had not reached about 24 million Americans, including almost 28% of people in rural areas.
Do the household math before you trust your plan. If three people are on video calls at once, you need roughly three times the per-call figure. Run a speed test at the hour you will teach, not at midnight when the network is quiet.
Wired beats wireless
Speed is only half of the story. Delay and jitter cause the frozen faces and robotic voices that students complain about. The ITU-T G.114 recommendation advises keeping one-way delay under 150 milliseconds for natural conversation.

A laptop on a desk films you from below. Raise it on a stand or a stack of books until the lens meets your eyes, and add an external keyboard. Prepare the desk and background

Configure the Room Before Anyone Joins
Room settings decide how the first five minutes feel. Set them once and reuse them for every lesson.

Privacy and accessibility rules in the US
Three sets of rules affect a virtual classroom setup in the United States.
FERPA. A video that directly relates to a student and that the school maintains can count as an education record. Decide where recordings are stored and who may watch them before you press record. The Department of Education keeps a resource list on FERPA and virtual learning.
COPPA. The FTC's amended COPPA Rule took effect on June 23, 2025, and most provisions required compliance by April 22, 2026. If you teach children under 13, use tools your school has approved. Prefer guest access to student accounts.
ADA Title II. Public schools and colleges must bring web content and apps in line with WCAG 2.1 Level AA.
